Ultimate Eagle soars to victory at Del Mar!
As the homepage of MVP Racing warned (see 7/15/2011 article), Ultimate Eagle came thru with flying colors with his hard fought win on July 31st, 2011 and reinforced Pender and owner BJ’s Wright’s strong opinion of their powerfully made, 3 year old Mizzen Mast colt. In his first start on grass, blinkers on, Ultimate Eagle sat chilly ten lengths behind super fast fractions set by a run off leader. Ultimate Eagle relaxed very kindly under new rider, Martin Pedroza, who took a snug hold of the high spirited colt. At the 3/8ths pole, however, niether horse nor rider could wait much longer. Pedroza asked him the question and within three strides they were on the lead by themselves. Ultimate Eagle “made the lead so quickly, that he may have pulled himself up a little bit and waited on Carla’s horse (Irish Art).” He added, “expectations were super high and the pressure was on this colt. He wanted to get on with the proceedings.” From the 1/8th pole to the wire, Ultimate Eagle and Irish Art engaged in a patented head to head stretch duel that had all of the connections off their seats cheering their colt home as he crossed the wire a nose in front. In the winners circle, jockey Pedroza exclaimed “nobody was passing this colt today…he had running on his mind.”
On tuesday, 8/2/2011, Pender reports that Ultimate Eagle has emerged from his maiden breaking win with no major problems and is bieng pointed for the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on September 4th, 2011.
