Mike Pender Racing’s approach is simple: Find the fastest race horse at a wholesale price. With the advent of conglomerate horse racing partnerships, too many owners are paying retail. History has determined that an experience with Mike Pender Racing will allow a racehorse owner his/her best possible chance to own a quality thoroughbred. And along the way…have fun, and love their horses at the barn and at the races.
And he has the eye at the sales. His record over the past 13 years of picking out horses at the 2 Year Old in Training Sales, from Barretts to Ocala, speaks for itself. Here are just a few examples…but why not see for yourself, get on board! The 2018 Spring Sales are ramping up, and Mike will be there.
Jeranimo: Purchased for $70,000 at Barrett’s May 2008 for BJ Wright, he amassed over $1.5M in earnings, captured two G1s, six G2s including the storied San Gabriel three times with the final at the age of eight, a 2nd and 3rd in a G1, and five times placed in G2 or G3 races….all on synthetic and turf. And lastly, he competed twice in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and one Breeder’s Cup Turf Sprint. A horse for the ages.
Ultimate Eagle: Purchased Ultimate Eagle for $70,000 at OBS Ocala March 2010 for BJ Wright. After a near death bout with colic as a 2YO, he came to the races as a 3YO in May 2011 with several subpar performances on a synthetic surface. “The Eagle” was then switched to turf, given blinkers and Martin Pedroza, and rattled off 4 victories – a maiden special and allowance race at Del Mar, then the G2 Oak Tree Derby and G1 Hollywood Derby. From debut to G1 winner in six months. He followed that up with a dirt win in the 2012 G2 Strub Stakes on dirt, a 2nd place to Data Link in the 2012 G2 Citation on turf, and a 2nd place to Coil in the 2013 G2 San Pasqual Stakes on dirt.
Polonius: Bought Polonius for $150,000 at Barrett’s March 2007 for BJ Wright. Three months later in June, in his first start, he was a stylish maiden winner in wire to wire fashion by six lengths. Offers were made up to 600k. Eight months later, as a three year old, Polonius won the Pasadena Stakes and was ranked among the top five 3 year olds in the country. Offers were made up to 2.5 million.
Lombo: Pender picked out Lombo for a mere $75,000 from the OBS March 2017 2YO in Training sale, where prices are known to go over a million. He broke his maiden in his 3rd lifetime start, in January 2018, at Santa Anita for owners Mike and Cory Lombardi. He followed that up with an 8-1 front-running victory in the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes on 2.3.18 at Santa Anita, earning himself 10 Kentucky Derby points.
Boat Trip: Owned by BJ Wright and James Hirschman III, Boat Trip was purchased as a 2YO in training at the March Ocala Sale in 2011 for $1110,000. This son of Harlan’s Holiday went on to win the 2013 Tsunami Slew Stakes, place in the G2 Eddie D Stakes, compete in the 2013 Breeder’s Cup Turf Sprint, and win the 2013 Hollywood Turf Express. His earnings reached $261,746.
Tasty Treat: The reliable Roar filly notched her 7 lifetime victories. Owned by Cunningham Stables, she was picked out and purchased for $25,000 at Barrett’s May 2011. Her earnings topped off at $336K, highlighted by a win in the 2013 running of the Daisycutter Hcp at Del Mar.
Two Six Wins: This handsome Midshipman colt was purchased for $60,000 at the 2014 March OBS 2YO in Training Sale, and owned by the group of Two Six Racing, Ciardella, Fetkin and Joslin. He broke his maiden in a MSW at second asking on 7/6/14, went on to compete in the G2 Best Pal at Del Mar in August.
Pat’s Back: Bought for $27,000 at OBS Ocala June 2012, she amassed earnings of $56,497, including breaking her maiden in a MSW at Del Mar, before being privately sold in December 2012.
